Mountain Formation: How were mountains formed, does their height increase with time?

Mountains on Earth are formed when two tectonic plates collide. Instead of sinking under one plate, both of them shrink under extreme pressure and turn upwards. The Himalayas were formed when the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate about 40 to 50 million years ago. Because of this the land was pushed upwards and the world’s highest mountain range was formed.

Volcanic mountains are formed when molten magma rises from inside the Earth and erupts on the surface. As the lava cools and hardens due to repeated eruptions, it accumulates and forms a mountain.
