Hair Transplant Regulation In India: In view of the increasing cases of wrong procedures and complaints related to hair transplant, the central government is going to make a big change. The government is now preparing to recognize hair transplant as a “surgical procedure” by removing it from the category of “cosmetic salon”. This will prevent negligence in this rapidly growing industry. Let us tell you in detail what the matter is.
Why was the decision taken?
Salons usually provide simple services such as haircuts or styling, whereas hair transplant is a medical procedure. It requires needle, anesthesia, clean operation theater and expert doctor. The National Council for Clinical Establishments has drafted minimum standards for hair transplant centres. According to this, now only qualified doctors and especially dermatologists and plastic surgeons will be able to do hair transplant. People without medical degree will not be able to do this work.
What changes were made?
According to the report of Mint, this information has come out on the basis of three government officials, out of which one government official said that “The purpose of the new rules is to close down fake and illegal clinics, hair transplant is often shown as a normal service of salon. Now only expert doctors especially dermatologists and plastic surgeons will do it.”
Steps taken after court decision
This decision is being taken after the order of Delhi High Court in May 2022. The court had said that hair transplant is a medical surgery and only expert doctors can do it with the consent of the patient. However, the Health Ministry will not implement these rules until a decision is taken on a related case pending in the High Court.
big market in india
According to market research agency IMARC Group, the hair transplant market in India is currently worth about $252 million, which can increase to $1.7 billion by 2033. Many big companies are working in many fields. Due to new technologies like follicular unit extraction and direct hair implantation, about 80 percent of the industry’s earnings come from men. About 3.5 lakh hair transplants are done every year in the country, in which at least six people have died since 2016 due to wrong treatment and negligence. Among these, reasons like excessive dose of anesthesia, allergic shock, infection spread due to dirt and tissue damage have come to light. Another official said, “Many cheap clinics have neither emergency facilities nor trained staff. The government wants strict rules to be implemented in such centers, so that the lives of the patients can be protected.”
