Investigation of the ‘white collar’ terrorist module captured after the recent car bomb blast near the Red Fort has revealed that the mastermind of this conspiracy, Dr. Umar-un-Nabi, was trying to recruit another suicide bomber.

However, he could not succeed in this, because the person concerned decided to step back from this terrorist conspiracy citing the need to help his family during the apple growing season. Officials gave this information on Sunday (January 18).

NIA did terrorist module

Srinagar Police and National Investigation Agency (NIA) have exposed a parallel terror module run by Nabi. Nabi was the same person who was driving a vehicle laden with explosives near the historic Red Fort on November 10. More than 12 people died in this explosion. During the interrogation of the arrested suspects, the recruitment strategies adopted by the doctor-turned-terrorist have been revealed.

On the basis of this information, NIA arrested Shopian resident Yasir Ahmed Dar. Officials said Nabi had successfully radicalized Dar as a potential suicide bomber, but during a meeting in August last year, he decided to back out of the plot at the last minute. He cited “apple growing season” and repair work at home as the reasons for this.

Dar was in contact with Nabi since 2023

According to officials, Dar was in contact with Nabi since 2023. He also admitted that Nabi being a professional doctor was a major reason for his influence. Being a doctor, his radical views seemed more impressive and “credible” to those recruited.

Officials said that investigation has indicated that Nabi was not only a terrorist but also used to recruit strategically. He was creating a secondary, independent cell to ensure continuity of the terrorist operation even after the ‘primary cell’ was captured.

Police recovered ‘voice note’ from the phone of the accused

During the investigation, the police also recovered a ‘voice note’ from the phone of one of the accused, in which he is taking ‘Bayat’ (pledge of allegiance) for Jihad. Dar’s name, which had dropped out of school midway, had come up in the investigation earlier also, when one of his friends was associated with terrorist organisations.

Officials said that during interrogation it was revealed that he was in touch with Nabi through social media ‘Telegram’ and he was always asked to ensure excellent physical training. According to officials, Dar was the second potential suicide bomber whom Nabi was trying to include in this terror module. He told that Nabi was a fundamentalist and believed that it was very important to have a suicide bomber to carry out terrorist activities.

Srinagar Police had arrested Danish amid investigation.

Last year, when this terrorist module was being busted by Srinagar Police, a person named Yasir alias Danish was arrested from Qazigund in South Kashmir. Yasir, a political science graduate, admitted that he had come in contact with ‘Doctor Module’ in a mosque in Kulgam in October 2024. From there he was taken to the rented accommodation of Al-Falah University located in Faridabad.

Yasir told during his interrogation that other members of the “white collar” terrorist module wanted him to become a member of the banned organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), he was mentally influenced by Nabi for several months to such an extent that he became ready to become a suicide bomber. However, the plot failed in April last year when he decided to retreat.

He cited his poor financial condition for this and also said that suicide is prohibited in Islam. Srinagar Police, under the leadership of Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. GV Sandeep Chakraborty, busted this module, in which the suicide bomber was being searched.

Dangerous aspect related to investigation of terrorist network

This incident has added a dangerous new aspect to the investigation of the inter-state terrorist network linked to JeM. Nabi, a 28-year-old doctor from Pulwama, emerged as the most staunch and important operational member of this network spread across Kashmir, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Officials believe that he was planning a vehicle attack on December 6, the day of demolition of Babri Masjid.

Officials said his intention was to plant the vehicle containing the explosives in a crowded place, either in the country’s capital or at a place of religious importance, and then disappear. According to the interrogation of the co-accused, Nabi’s transformation began in 2021 after his visit to Turkiye with co-accused Dr. Muzammil Ahmed Ganai, where he allegedly met JeM activists.

The accused collected chemical substances

After this trip, Nabi and Ganai, who taught at Al Falah University in Faridabad, started collecting large quantities of the chemical from the open market. It included 360 kg of ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate and sulphur, much of which was stored near the university campus.

The December plot failed when a meticulous investigation by the Srinagar Police led to the arrest of Ganai and the seizure of explosives, which panicked the Nabi and ultimately led to a premature explosion outside the Red Fort.

Terrorist network revealed after the incident

This complex inter-state terror network was exposed after a small but significant incident of appearance of JeM posters on the walls of Banpora, Naugam on the outskirts of Srinagar on October 19 last year.

Srinagar police registered a case and examined the CCTV footage, following which three locals – Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil, Yasir-ul-Ashraf and Maqsood Ahmed Dar alias Shahid – were arrested. Cases of stone pelting were registered against all of them earlier also.

Through their interrogation, Maulvi Irfan Ahmed, a resident of Shopian, who was first a paramedic and then became an Imam, was arrested. He is accused of sending posters and using his influence to radicalize doctors.
