India 2047 Youth Conclave is being organized by ABP Network. In this special program, people from different areas of the country are communicating directly with the youth. During the conclave, Anshu Gupta, founder and director of Goonj, an organization working in the field of social service, shared heart-touching experiences. He told how a small thought took the form of a big movement today. Narrating an incident from his early days, Anshu Gupta said that once he was roaming in the streets of Old Delhi. There he saw a woman whose job was to pick up unclaimed dead bodies with the help of the police.
He told that in the year 1991, the woman used to get only Rs 20 and a white cloth for this work. When this situation was carefully understood, a shocking thing came to light. While in summer, 4 to 5 dead bodies had to be lifted every day, in winter this number increased to 10 to 12. The reason for this was not the cold, but the lack of warm clothes among the poor people. People lost their lives due to lack of clothes to protect themselves from the cold.
What did Anshu Gupta say?
Referring to that woman’s daughter Bano, Anshu Gupta said that Bano had once told that when she feels cold, she goes near the dead body and sticks to it, because the dead body does not change its side. Hearing this, everyone’s heart was filled with joy. This experience completely changed Anshu Gupta’s thinking and it was from here that the foundation of Goonj was laid.
He told that Goonj started with only 67 clothes. Today this organization has been working for 27 years. Anshu Gupta said that when we give old clothes or goods to someone, we call it donation. But the truth is that if the goods are not given properly and with respect, then they become a burden and not a donation. Goonj tried to change this thinking.
He told that the purpose of Goonj is not to make anyone feel helpless or weak for help. Here the needy are given help with respect and not pity. The organization collects all kinds of useful items from across the country and then family kits are prepared from them. These kits are sent to thousands of villages, where people can use them as per their need.
Changed thinking regarding silk thread
Shwetabh Ranjan, Chief Mentor of Weaver Stories also expressed his views in the programme. He shared a different and new thinking regarding silk thread. Shwetabh Ranjan told that his method is completely based on non-violence. Generally, silkworms are killed to prepare silk, but this is not done in their model.
He told that the silk thread is prepared in such a way that it does not harm insects. He also explained how in this way the weavers are getting a chance to move forward. The aim of Weaver Stories is not just to earn profits but to bring change in the lives of weavers.
