Amidst the ongoing internal tussle in Punjab Congress, about 35 party leaders have written a letter to the central leadership asking for a meeting. All these leaders are said to be associated with the faction of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. The leaders say that they want to apprise the top leadership about the current situation of the party in the state and the ground reality.
The letter is not public, but the signatures are confirmed.
Although this letter has not been made public, but former MLA Kushaldeep Singh ‘Kikki’ Dhillon has claimed that it contains signatures of many former Congress MLAs and former ministers. He clarified that Channi himself was not among the signers of this letter.
Letter written to these leaders
According to the leaders, this letter has been sent to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal and Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel. The leaders say that this letter is neither in favor nor against anyone, only time has been sought for dialogue.
Channi’s video opened discord
Amidst this entire incident, after a video of Channi surfaced, the internal discord of Congress came to the fore. In the video, Channi raised the issue of Dalits not getting proper representation in the party.
He said that the Dalit population in Punjab is between 35 to 38 percent, yet their representation is not visible in top positions.
Channi also clarified that his words were not against any caste or community and he was made a victim of malicious propaganda. Meanwhile, BJP leader Kuljeet Singh Dhillon has increased the political temperature further by inviting Channi to join BJP.
Let us tell you that assembly elections are to be held in Punjab in 2027. In such a situation, this movement within the Congress is being considered important in terms of both organizational strength and electoral strategy.
