Nipah Virus Bat Transmission: After the case of Nipah virus came to light in West Bengal, the concern of the whole world has increased once again. The reason is clear that this virus spreads from animals to humans and if it starts spreading from human to human, then the situation can worsen very rapidly. Usually its source is bats that eat fruits, sometimes this virus reaches the body through raw date juice or fruits contaminated by bats. The most scary thing is its mortality rate, which is said to be around 40 to 75 percent. This is the reason why health agencies go on high alert as soon as a single case of Nipah is found in any country.

Why is Nipah virus so dangerous?

The biggest reason that makes Nipah dangerous is that till now there is no sure cure or vaccine available for it. Treatment is done only on the basis of symptoms and in many cases the patient has to be kept in ICU. Dr Ashutosh Kumar Garg told TOI that even those who survive may suffer long-term neurological problems.

How does Nipah spread in the body?

Nipah virus does not show immediate effect.Dr. Bharat Kumar Surisetty explains that its incubation period is usually 4 to 14 days, but in some cases it can remain hidden for up to 45 days. During this time, the person feels absolutely fine, but the virus continues to be active inside.

According to experts, Nipah infection often appears in two stages, in which

First phase – flu-like phase

In this stage, there are complaints like high fever, headache, body ache, sore throat, vomiting and nausea. Many times people ignore it considering it to be normal flu or Covid.

Second stage – the most dangerous

From here the disease can take a fatal form. Nipah virus attacks the brain and can cause encephalitis. During this time, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, confusion, loss of consciousness, difficulty in breathing, seizures and even coma can occur within 24 to 48 hours.

How does Nipah virus spread?

From direct contact with infected bats or pigs

Drinking fruit or raw date juice contaminated by bats

Through contact with body fluids of an infected person (human to human)

In which countries have cases been found?

Cases of Nipah virus have been reported in many parts of the world, including Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines. According to reports in India, two people have died due to this in West Bengal, after which an alert has been issued in many countries of the world. Let us tell you that as soon as a case comes to light, testing, isolation and contact tracing are intensified so that the infection can be prevented from spreading.
