How AI Detects Pesticides in Fruits and Vegetables: Artificial Intelligence, which is already playing an important role in fields like education, health, industry and business, has now reached the kitchen. A new portable device can check the quality of fruits and vegetables in just 90 seconds. By scanning a small piece of a fruit or vegetable, it gives information about pesticide residues, types of chemicals present and their possible health effects. This entire process is done without any chemicals, safely and without causing any harm.
Amazing work of IIT Kanpur
This technology has been developed by ‘ScanX’, a startup incubated in IIT. The team has created this solution by combining portable NIR-MIR spectroscopy with AI and machine learning. The device uses near-infrared light of 750 to 2500 nanometers to reach the inner layer of fruits and vegetables and identify the elements present in them. Along with this, mid-infrared waves help in detecting 2.5 to 10 micrometer harmful gases and pesticide residues. The combination of these two technologies enables fast, accurate and non-destructive chemical testing.
Will hit the market in 2026
The startup has also filed a patent for this device and plans to launch it in the market by the end of 2026. It has been designed keeping in mind both farmers and common users. Good results have emerged in initial trials. The cost of one time test is expected to be only 10 to 15 paise, which will make it within the reach of common people. A device can work for at least five years and can be reused after service if needed. It has a replaceable battery.
What do experts say?
According to Rajatvardhan, founder of ScanX, the presence of pesticides in fruits and vegetables is a matter of great concern today. People eat them every day for health, but do not know how safe they are. Excessive use of pesticides in farming can increase the risk of cancer and diseases related to the nervous system. Traditional lab tests are expensive and time consuming, so regular testing is not possible for common people. This device can prove to be especially beneficial for farmers doing organic farming. They will now be able to easily prove the quality of their products and get better prices through fast and accurate testing at home. This technology is being considered an important step towards providing safe food to consumers and strengthening food safety.
