Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, despite his image of maintaining distance from dynastic politics, on Tuesday (March 03, 2026) gave consent to his only son Nishant Kumar to enter politics. This development created a wave of enthusiasm in Janata Dal (United) and speculations intensified that Nishant could be sent to Rajya Sabha.
This announcement was made by State Rural Development Minister and senior JD(U) leader Shravan Kumar. Shravan Kumar has been a close aide of the JD(U) supremo since his Samata Party days in the 1990s.
Shravan Kumar told PTI, “On the eve of Holi, I want to share a good news with the people of Bihar. There was a demand for a long time within JD(U) and among the youth of the state that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant should enter politics. The way has been cleared for this and a formal announcement will be made in a day or two.”
When asked if Nishant, an engineering graduate who has crossed the age of 40, could be made one of the party’s two candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections, he said, “Anything is possible. Top leaders will sit and discuss and everything will become clear in a day or two.”

As soon as this news spread, there was an atmosphere of celebration in the state office of JD(U) in Patna. For some time, there were posters on the walls of the office in which party workers were demanding Nitish Kumar’s son to take over the leadership. As soon as this news came, the workers distributed sweets, applied gulal to each other and raised slogans expressing happiness over the entry of their leader’s son into politics.
‘Nishant is popular because of his polite behaviour’
State government minister and JD(U) national general secretary Ashok Chaudhary said, “This is very good news. Nishant is popular among the people of Bihar because of his polite behaviour. He is an engineer like his father and is similar to him in many respects.”
On the question of dynasty rule, Choudhary said, “Our leaders are not imposing any unfit child on the party. Nishant has the full potential to become a good leader and the party itself wanted him to enter politics.”
Allies have also welcomed this decision. Former state BJP president and minister Dilip Jaiswal said, “If Nitish Kumar’s son enters politics, it is a good thing. It is time for a new generation of leadership to emerge.”
