Can Fresh Paint Cause Breathing Problems: A newly painted room often gives a feeling of freshness, shining walls, a clean environment and the satisfaction of change. But the strong, chemical-like smell that persists for a few days is not just a sign of newness, it is also a sign of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) dissolved in the air, which can enter the body through breath. VOCs like formaldehyde, benzene and toluene are found in paints, varnishes, thinners and adhesives. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, during activities such as painting, BOC levels indoors can be several times higher than in outdoor air. These chemicals co-excite the respiratory ducts, which can cause cough, sore throat and chest tightness.
What are the problems?
Dr. Akash Shah, Vice President Technical, Newberg Diagnostics, explains that VOCs can cause inflammation in the bronchial tubes and increase mucus through the respiratory tract. Due to this the respiratory ducts become narrow. If we talk about its symptoms, it may include persistent dry cough, wheezing and mild breathlessness. In healthy adults, these symptoms usually subside when exposure stops. But repeated exposure can cause the airways to become more sensitive. The risk is higher in children, the elderly, smokers and asthma patients. In the long run, persistent inflammation can lead to problems like chronic bronchitis.
When should one get tested?
If cough persists for 3 to 4 weeks after painting, a lung examination may be necessary. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also states that lung function tests are helpful in identifying early COPD patterns.Dr. Harsha Jain told TOI that poor ventilation could make the situation more serious. Closed windows, relying only on AC and painting in humid weather trap BOCs indoors. Cross-ventilation i.e. opening more than one window helps in removing the chemical faster.
How can we protect ourselves?
For protection, it is better to choose low-VOC or no VOC paint. Wear a mask during painting and keep the room open for at least 48 to 72 hours. Where possible, keep small children and the elderly in another room or place for a few days. Apart from this, wearing a mask while painting is also beneficial and with this you can avoid this problem. The beauty of the house is important, but health is even more important.
