I am thankful to get the silver medal: Ayush Shetty

Ayush Shetty said, ‘I think it was a great tournament for me, I am really happy with the way I played throughout the tournament. My matches were very difficult, but I am happy with the way I won all of them. As far as the final is concerned, it was a bit disappointing. I wanted to finish the tournament with a win, but credit goes to Shi Yu Qi, he was the better player that day. I am thankful to get the silver medal.

The 20-year-old shuttler, ranked 25th in the world, lost 8-21, 10-21 to current world champion Yu Qi in the final held at the Ningbo Olympic Centre. Ayush becomes the second Indian men’s singles player to reach the final of Badminton Asian Championship

After defeating defending champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semi-finals, Ayush became the second Indian men’s singles player (and third player overall) to reach the final of the Badminton Asian Championships. If Shetty had won the final, he would have equaled Dinesh Khanna, who became the men’s singles champion in 1965.

He further said, ‘This tournament gave me a lot of confidence that I can become the best player in the world. The next tournament will be Thomas Cup. I am very excited for this. We will try our best to bring the trophy home. Beating the best players in the world boosts confidence, but I need to work on beating them consistently. The goal going forward is to be more consistent and play at this level regularly.
