Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma took oath as MLA on the first day of the new assembly on Thursday. Pro-tem Speaker of Assam Assembly Chandra Mohan Patwari administered the oath to Sharma as a member of the 16th Assembly. Sharma took oath in Assamese language.
Temporary Chairman Patwari said, ‘All members can take oath in any recognized language as per their wish. They can submit copies of their oath in the assembly office. ‘After the Chief Minister, other MLAs also took oath in different languages like Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and Sanskrit.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a historic victory in the state assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. This alliance includes Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
BJP alone won 82 seats, while AGP and BPF won 10 seats each. At the same time, Congress and Raijor Dal, which were part of the opposition alliance of six parties, won 19 and two seats respectively. Apart from this, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which contested alone, won two seats and Trinamool Congress won one seat.
