Organic Waste Economy: The rapidly increasing wet waste in Indian cities is no longer just a challenge but can become a big opportunity for employment, clean energy and economic development. According to a report by the ‘Council on Energy, Environment and Water’ (CEEW), India’s urban organic waste (food scraps, vegetable peels and gardening waste) can create an economy worth more than Rs 5 lakh crore by the year 2047 and provide direct employment to 26 lakh people.
What is organic waste?
There is really a ‘treasure’ hidden in the wet garbage of your kitchen. This waste is also called biological treasure or ‘black gold’. Wet waste includes things like fruit-vegetable peels, tea leaves and leftover food. Instead of throwing it away considering it useless, you can use it in the form of compost, biogas, bio-CNG and other organic products, which will play a big role.

1.71 lakh tonnes of garbage every day
According to a report, ‘Indian cities generate about 1,71,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste every day, of which about half is wet waste. About 61 percent of the current total municipal solid waste is treated. By 2047, urban municipal waste alone could reach around 200 million tonnes per year.

Lakhs of jobs can be created
The report said that large-scale employment can be created in waste collection, sorting, processing, plant operation, technical maintenance and other services. There is a possibility of creation of about 26 lakh direct jobs through better waste management. The report believes that if India sees wet waste as a source of employment rather than a problem and works rapidly on its management, then this sector can play an important role in achieving employment, investment, clean energy and climate goals in the coming years.
