In fact, before the establishment of CBSE, the responsibility of school education and board examinations in the country was with different provincial universities and regional education boards. At that time there was no single central education board for the entire country. Every region used to conduct examinations according to its education system.
When was the first board made?
The first education board in India was established in Uttar Pradesh in the year 1921. It was named ‘UP Board of High School and Intermediate Education’. This was the first board in the country which started conducting secondary and senior secondary level examinations systematically. At that time, the jurisdiction of UP Board was quite large and it used to conduct examinations for students from many areas.
After this, in view of the increasing scope of education and the needs of different areas, ‘Board of High School and Intermediate Education, Rajputana’ was established in the year 1929. This board was created for the students of the then areas like Rajputana, Ajmer-Merwara, Central India and Gwalior. Its objective was to develop a uniform examination system in different fields.

When did CBSE come?
The story of formation of CBSE is also quite interesting. Formed in the year 1929, this board was developed after independence according to the new education policies and national needs. Finally, in the year 1952, its name was changed to ‘Central Board of Secondary Education’ i.e. CBSE. With this, a central institution was started in the country, which started giving direction to secondary education at the national level.
However, CBSE got wide recognition at the national level after its reorganization in the year 1962. At that time, there was frequent transfer of central government employees to different states. In such a situation, the need for a uniform curriculum and examination system was felt so that the education of their children is not affected.
If we talk about board examinations, in the initial phase the examinations of class 10th and 12th were conducted directly by the universities or regional education boards. Students had to appear for examinations as per the rules and syllabus of the universities. At that time the examination system was quite limited compared to today.
