Shubman Gill was second in the list of batsmen who scored the most runs in IPL 2026, he scored 732 runs in 16 innings. Under his captaincy the team also reached the finals. In terms of scoring runs, he was only 44 runs behind Orange Cap winner Vaibhav Suryavanshi. While Vaibhav was given a place in the national team for the first time, Gill has been kept out of the squads for Ireland, England and Asian Games. Now the reason behind this has also come to light.

Shubman Gill has also scored a century in the first innings of the Test against Afghanistan. On Saturday itself, the first day of this Test, the Indian squad for the tour of Ireland, England and Asian Games was announced. Suryakumar Yadav was dropped in all three squads, after which BCCI has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the captain. Tilak Verma has been elected vice-captain and Vaibhav Suryavanshi made it to all three squads.

Why not choose Shubman Gill?

After the announcement of the T20 team, some people were criticizing on social media why Shubman Gill was not selected despite being in excellent form. Now it has been revealed in a report what is the reason for this decision of BCCI. A source told PTI that Gill has been asked to give priority to Test and ODI.

Also read- Shubman Gill, the captain who scored the most centuries for India in Tests, overtook Ganguly-Dhoni.

The source said, “The selection committee has asked Shubman Gill to give priority to Test and ODI cricket till the 2027 ODI World Cup. He is in excellent form, but this decision has been taken because the board wants him to be fully fit for the upcoming important tournament.”

Also read- Indian veteran raised questions on Shreyas Iyer becoming the captain, also got angry on dropping Suryakumar.

India has a very busy schedule for the next 18 months, if Shubman Gill plays all three formats then it can be very tiring for him. Before the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027, India has to play 35 ODI and 9 WTC matches. For this reason, Gill is not included in the T20 team, although it is expected that he will make a comeback before the Olympics and T20 World Cup to be held in 2028.
