The leaders of Britain, France and Germany have supported direct talks between Ukraine and Russia. He believes that this can help in implementing the ceasefire and taking peace talks forward. He said this after the meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in London.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Zelensky issued a joint statement after the meeting. It said that they support direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia and want America and Europe to also be actively involved in it.
According to the report of Xinhua News Agency, the four leaders demanded immediate and complete implementation of the ceasefire. He said that talks should be started considering the existing battle line (front line) as the basis. The statement also said that Europe should play an important role in the peace process. All efforts in this direction should be made in collaboration with Ukraine, European partner countries and America.
The leaders also discussed the security arrangements of Ukraine after the ceasefire. The statement said that Europe’s security interests should be kept in mind in any agreement. Also, any decision related to the European Union (EU) and NATO will require the consent of their member countries. Earlier on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had said that if Zelensky wants to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he can come to Moscow any time.

This statement came in response to Zelensky’s open letter, in which he had proposed to meet Putin face-to-face to discuss the peace process. In his letter, Zelensky wrote, ‘Ukraine proposes to end this war through direct dialogue between us and you. I propose to meet you. He also suggested that Europe and America be included in this process.
Zelensky said that it would not be right to just sit waiting for America to again pay full attention to ending the Russia-Ukraine war, because at the moment its attention is focused on the ongoing war with Iran. He also appealed to fix a clear date for the meeting and said that Ukraine is fully ready to implement the ceasefire during the talks. Zelensky also said that Switzerland, Türkiye and some Arab countries have expressed willingness to host such talks.
