Does Indian Thali Increase Diabetes Risk: When it comes to food in India, it is rare to see that there is no dal, roti and rice in the plate. Even today in many homes people eat both rice and roti in the same meal. This is not just a matter of taste or habit, but is part of a tradition that has been going on for years. But now health experts believe that this habit can cause problems for some people.
Why is the problem happening?
India is already counted among the countries with the highest number of diabetes patients in the world. In such a situation, doctors are now also looking at those eating habits which can play a role in increasing blood sugar and increasing the risk of obesity. Divya Jain, senior dietitian of CK Birla Hospital, Jaipur, says that the problem is not in the pulses, roti or rice, but in what quantity and how they are being eaten, it is more important.
Who are the people getting sick from Indian plate?
In fact, a typical Indian thali often includes rice, roti, potato curry, dal, sweets and sometimes even sweet drinks. Most of these things are rich in carbohydrates. When multiple carb sources are included in a single meal, the glucose load on the body increases. Its impact can be especially severe on those people who are already suffering from problems like prediabetes, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or insulin resistance.
What mistake do we make?
Divya Jain says that the biggest problem today is that people’s plates are rich in carbohydrates, but the amount of protein and fiber is less. Many people eat rice along with two-three rotis, while consuming protein items like cheese, curd, eggs, fish, chicken or pulses in limited quantity, while vegetables are often seen only as a side dish.

What should we keep in mind?
Modern lifestyle has further increased this problem. Earlier people used to do more physical hard work, due to which the body used up extra energy. But now working while sitting for long hours, less physical activity and increasing consumption of processed food are increasing health risks. However, this does not mean at all that you should stop eating rice or roti. According to experts, both can be part of a balanced diet. What is needed is to keep the balance of the plate correct.

How should our plate be?
For a healthy plate, keep vegetables and salad in half the plate. Include protein sources like lentils, cheese, egg, chicken, fish or curd in one-fourth portion. Place roti or rice in the remaining one-fourth portion. Avoid eating large quantities of rice and roti together on a regular basis. Experts say that the risk of diabetes does not increase due to any one food item, but due to long-term unbalanced eating habits. Therefore, there is a need not to give up pulses and bread, but to make the plate balanced.
