The atmosphere of talks in Switzerland on Sunday (21 June 2026) between Iran and America to reduce the ongoing tension in the Middle East remained a bit tense, although an agreement has been reached between the two countries on important issues. Following differences over Lebanon and US President Donald Trump’s statement, the talks were halted for some time; after some tension, the outcome of the meeting was positive. Vice President JD Vance attended this meeting from America’s side. The Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The first round of talks began after a recent interim agreement, which aims to reduce the tension and conflict that has been going on for the last 4 months. Also, both the countries want to move towards a big and permanent agreement. This includes many important issues like Iran’s nuclear program and regional disputes. Before the talks started, Iran had made it clear that the talks would move forward only when America fulfills its promises. During the meeting, Iran has also said that if the conflict in Lebanon does not stop, then talks on other issues will not move forward.

How long did the first round of talks last?
The first round of talks lasted for about 80 minutes. According to the Foreign Ministry of Iran, during this period issues like ceasefire, relief in sanctions and release of Iran’s frozen property were discussed. Iranian officials said that a draft framework to relax the ban on Iranian oil exports is almost ready. Also, options to release freeze funds with the help of Qatar were also discussed. Tension increased when Donald Trump warned Iran to stop its allies in Lebanon, otherwise it would have to face serious consequences. After this, the Iranian delegation protested and left the meeting for some time. According to Iranian media, this was done in protest against Trump’s statement.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that America should give its statements very carefully. He said that Iran’s army is ready to respond to every situation. JD Vance tried to calm the atmosphere. He said that tension in such talks is normal and the talks are still going on. He said that this process is not easy, but America is committed to regional peace.
