England’s troubles have increased further after suffering a crushing 253-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the Oval Test. The team has been heavily fined and its World Test Championship (WTC) points have also been deducted. This has had a direct impact on its position in the WTC points table.
Although the defeat against New Zealand proved to be a big blow for England, the reason for the cut in match fees and losing 12 WTC points was not the defeat but the team’s poor over rate. England could bowl 12 less overs within the stipulated time, due to which the International Cricket Council (ICC) fined them and deducted 12 points in the WTC 2025-27 cycle.
Now let us see what effect this cut had on England. After losing 12 points, now only 38 points are left in England’s account and the team has reached seventh place in the points table. With this, its points percentage (PCT) has decreased from 34.72 to 26.38.
This punishment was given by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft. On-field umpires Adrian Holdstock and Nitin Menon, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd had given a report to the match referee regarding the slow over rate. England captain Joe Root accepted his mistake, after which no further formal hearing will be held in this matter.
