There were many questions in the minds of students and their parents regarding the three-language formula of CBSE. CBSE has now removed these. It has been said by the board that at present no major changes will be made for the students of class 7th, 8th, 9th and current 10th. The board has also issued detailed guidelines regarding the new language policy.
According to the guidelines issued by the CBSE Board, the new language policy will not be applicable to the existing class 10th students also. Due to this, students appearing for board exams this year do not need to worry about any changes or additional subjects. CBSE has also made it clear that those students of class 7th, 8th and 9th, who have already chosen two foreign languages, will be able to continue with their same languages. However, they will also have to study an Indian language (Indian language/language) along with it.
This is how it will be implemented
CBSE says that the new language policy will be implemented in a phased manner. This should not have any sudden impact on the studies of the students. For this, necessary study material according to the class level will also be given within the stipulated time limit.
What rules will apply to which class?
- Class 10 (Session 2026-27)
There will be no changes for this batch. Like before, students will study only two languages. They will not need to take a third language.
- Class 9 (Session 2026-27)
Students of this batch will have to study three languages. It is necessary to have at least two Indian languages out of the three. If a student is already studying two Indian languages like Hindi and Tamil, then he can choose another Indian language or a foreign language like English, French as the third language.
If a student is studying Tamil and English, he or she has to add an Indian language as a third language. If a student is studying two foreign languages like English and French, he is given a one-time special exemption. He can continue both his foreign languages, but will have to study an Indian language along with it.

At present, class 9 students will not have to appear for the CBSE board exam in a third language. This language will be evaluated only at the school level.
- Class 7 & 8 (Session 2026-27)
When these students reach classes 9 and 10, they will still study three languages. If they have already selected two foreign languages, they need to add only one Indian language. These students will also not have to appear for the third language CBSE board exam. Only the school will evaluate it.
- Class 6 (Session 2026-27) and onwards batches
The new policy will be fully applicable to these students. Out of three languages, two Indian languages will be compulsory. When these students reach class 10, they will also appear for the board examination of the third language. NCERT is making new books available in 22 scheduled Indian languages.

Which students will get exemption?
CBSE has exempted some categories of students from this rule. Disabled (CwSN) students will get relief as per law. Studying Indian languages will not be mandatory for students of CBSE schools located outside India. Foreign students returning to India from abroad will also be exempted from the third Indian language.
What if the family moves to another state?
If a student’s parents shift to another state, the student can continue his or her previously chosen third language. In such cases the school will have to make arrangements for education.
How will teachers be available in schools?
CBSE has said that schools can use existing teachers, retired teachers, postgraduate teachers and online or hybrid medium if needed.
What did CBSE say?
The board says that this change is being made in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Its purpose is not to increase the examination burden on students, but to promote Indian languages and make language learning easy, interesting and useful. The board has also assured that no student will be harmed due to this change.
