Questions after women’s death

Questions were also raised regarding oxytocin in the case of death of five women after C-section in Kota, Rajasthan. During testing, the active ingredient of oxytocin was not found in the batch that was tested. After this, regulatory agencies took action against the drug manufacturer and distributor and the World Health Organization also sought information from the Indian government in this matter. However, later in the report of the eight-member expert committee of the Rajasthan government and the six-member team of AIIMS, New Delhi, it was said that poor oxytocin alone cannot be considered the direct cause of these deaths. According to the committee, the medical conditions of all the women were different and there was not enough evidence to hold any single cause responsible.

The investigation definitely revealed that there were serious deficiencies at many levels in the hospitals. Women with high-risk pregnancies were not adequately monitored. Records related to blood pressure, pulse rate, urine output, liver function test and medicines of many patients were found incomplete. In some cases, post mortem was not even conducted, making it difficult to confirm the actual cause of death.

What is the problem with this?

According to Medicinenet, as far as the side effects of oxytocin are concerned, during its use, some patients may have serious complications like nausea, vomiting, allergies, abnormal heart rate, changes in blood pressure and in rare cases, uterine rupture. Therefore, this medicine is given only under the supervision of a doctor. Its dosage is decided according to the condition of the patient and using it on your own or taking it without medical advice can be dangerous. Experts say that lack of quality of any medicine is a matter of concern, but medicine alone is not the cause of every serious incident. For safe treatment, good quality medicines, proper medical monitoring, timely treatment and following the prescribed protocols in hospitals, all are equally important.
