India-China Border Trade News: After a long wait, the situation has become clear regarding the India-China traditional border trade through Lipulekh Pass in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. The first group of Indian traders will enter the Taklakot market located in the Tibet region of China on 1 August 2026. After the program was approved by China, traders in the border areas have intensified their preparations.
Border trade, which was closed since 2020 due to the Corona epidemic, is going to start again after six years. This traditional trade through Lipulekh Pass is considered very important for the economy of the border area of Pithoragarh.
Business kept getting postponed due to construction in Taklakot
The process of India-China border trade had already been started, but due to the non-completion of the construction of the new trade market and warehouse at Taklakot on the Chinese side, Indian traders had to wait. The trading session formally started in June, but actual trading could not begin. Chinese officials had asked traders to wait until market preparations were completed.

Now from August 1, the way for Indian businessmen to reach Taklakot has been cleared. Traders will enter Tibet by crossing Lipulekh Pass. After this, buying and selling of goods will start between Indian and Tibetan traders in Taklakot Mandi.
Custom office opened in Gunji
To smoothly conduct border trade, the Indian administration has established a customs office at Gunji. Along with issuing trade passes to the traders, the checking and documentation process of their goods is being completed.
Earlier, 26 trade passes were issued for the first group, which included 17 traders and nine assistants. The administration had received applications from more than a hundred traders and the process of issuing passes for the second group was also started. Traders have already delivered their goods to the border villages and warehouses located near Lipulekh. Arrangements have also been made for horses and mules to carry the goods further.
Transportation of goods became easier due to construction of road
After the construction of the road from Dharchula to Lipulekh, this time the nature of business will appear changed as compared to before. Earlier, Indian traders had to transport most of the goods to the border through inaccessible routes with the help of horses and mules. Now goods can be transported very close to Lipulekh through vehicles. However, there is still a need for traditional means of carrying goods in the last stretch.
Hope of employment and business in marginal villages
With the resumption of India-China border trade, economic activities are expected to increase in Dharchula, Gunji, Nabhi, Kuti and surrounding border villages. Trade not only benefits registered traders, but also creates employment opportunities for laborers carrying goods, horse-mule operators, vehicle drivers and local shopkeepers.
Traders from India usually go to Taklakot with clothes, food items, spices and items of daily use. Wool, pashmina and other traditional products have been brought back from the Tibetan region. India-China border trade restarted in 1991, but was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with the resumption of business after six years, there is enthusiasm among marginal traders.
