DU Hindi Policy: DU has taken a big step to promote the use of the official language Hindi in the university and its affiliated colleges. A detailed circular has been issued by the Registrar of the University to all the Deans, Heads of Departments, College Principals, Directors and officers. In this, instructions have been given for effective compliance of the Official Language Act 1963 and Official Language Rules 1976 of the Government of India. Under the new instructions, all the major documents of the university will now be prepared in both Hindi and English languages, in which Hindi will be given priority. Along with this, emphasis has also been laid on maximum use of Hindi in office work, website and correspondence.
There will be changes in the document
According to the circular, all the important documents like notice board, information bulletin, file cover, rubber stamp, identity card, prospectus, library card, banner, hoarding, invitation letter and address written on envelope in the university and all its affiliated institutions will be prepared in both Hindi and English languages. In these, Hindi will be written first and English later in the same font size. Apart from this, orders, notifications, memoranda, rules, tenders, contracts, administrative reports and press releases issued under Section 3(3) of the Official Language Act will also be issued in both the languages.
Most office work will be done in Hindi only
The University has given instructions that replies to letters received in Hindi will be compulsorily given in Hindi. Along with the letters coming from A and B regions, emphasis has also been laid on giving replies in Hindi to the letters received in English from the Central Government offices. Instructions have been given to promote Hindi typing in the office through Unicode, to make entries in Hindi in service books and records and to keep the titles of all registers in both the languages. Apart from this, according to the circular, the DU website will open in Hindi by default, although there will be options for other languages also. Apart from journals and standard reference books, instructions have been given to spend at least 50 percent of the library grant on Hindi books, purchase of translation related literature and Hindi digital content.
Accountability will have to be given for not following the rules
The University has clarified that it will be the responsibility of the concerned authorities to ensure compliance with the instructions related to the official language. If these rules are ignored then the concerned officers themselves will be held accountable for it. Professor Hansraj Suman of Hindi Department of Aurobindo College has welcomed this initiative. He says that Hindi week and Hindi fortnight should be organized in every college, so that interest in Hindi increases among the students. He also suggested that inter-college competitions should be organized on subjects like Hindi journalism, theatre, films, radio jockeys, blog writing, social media and Hindi teaching, so that Hindi can also be linked with employment opportunities.

Benefits of giving priority to Hindi in DU
- According to experts, by giving priority to Hindi in DU, documents in Hindi will be available to the students and employees.
- Administrative procedures may be easier for students studying in Hindi medium.
- Better compliance with the government official language policy will be ensured.
- Use of Hindi and digital Hindi will be promoted in the office.
- With the promotion of Hindi, students’ interest in other Hindi based fields will increase.
What could be its disadvantages?
- By promoting Hindi in DU and preparing all the documents in two languages, the work of administration can increase.
- Regular updating of documents may require more time and resources.
- If attention is not paid to the quality of translation, there may be differences between the versions in the two languages.
- Maintaining websites, records and other digital materials in both languages will also increase administrative work.
