- India will import one-fourth of LPG from America by 2027.
- This step will reduce dependence on the Middle East, reducing supply risks.
- Indian Oil will take huge gas carriers to bring LPG directly.
LPG Rate Today on 30 July: Concerns remain about LPG prices in the country, even though its price has not been changed for more than a month. Due to the worsening situation in the West Asian region due to the ongoing tension between America and Iran, there has been a huge decline in the number of ships passing through the important shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz in recent times.
In such a situation, to reduce dependence on the Middle East and avoid supply disruptions, India is planning to import one-fourth of its total Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) imports from America by 2027. With this step of India, talks regarding trade deal with America are also expected to move forward.

Dependence on Gulf countries should be reduced
At the beginning of the year, due to the war between Iran and America and the blockade of Hormuz, a huge shortage of LPG was felt in the country. This is the reason why India has now decided to diversify the sources of LPG.
India is the world’s third largest oil importer and consumer. In 2025, India will source about 90 percent of its 21.85 million metric tons of LPG imports from the Middle East. According to government data, the share of imports in the total consumption of LPG in the country was about 66%.
Indian Oil bets on VLGCs
Meanwhile, reports are also emerging that India’s largest refinery company – Indian Oil Corp (IOC) is planning to buy 50% stake in a very large gas carrier (VLGCs).
The company is preparing to increase the import of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from America. IOC will be the first Indian refinery company to take ownership of VLGCs. This means that now instead of relying on rented chartered LPG and crude tankers to get gas, the company will import huge quantities of LPG directly from America from its own giant ship.
