Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir: A big step has been taken in the US regarding Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir. US MPs Joe Wilson and Jimmy Peneteta have introduced a bill called ‘Pakistan Democracy Act’, demanding a ban on General Munir under the Global Magnitsky Act. The bill has demanded a ban on General Munir and other Pakistani officials for harassment of other political opponents including Imran Khan.
If this bill is passed then General Munir may be banned within the next 180 days. This will ban his coming to America and his American visa can also be banned. The Global Magnitsky Act was created against Russia during the Obama administration in 2012, and can now be used against the Army Chief of Pakistan.
American stance on Imran Khan
In this bill, the release of Imran Khan has been demanded. Since the arrest of Imran Khan in August 2023, US MP Joe Wilson and many other Imran Khan have been considered a political prisoner. Wilson has demanded the US administration to pressurize the Pakistani army so that Imran Khan can be released. However, the US State Ministry has clarified that it does not interfere in the internal affairs of another country, but if Imran Khan is released, then there may be a big change in the political situation of Pakistan.
Ban under Global Magnitsky Act
The demand for banning General Aseem Munir under the Global Magnitsky Act has brought a new turn in Pakistan’s political situation. If this bill passes and Imran Khan is released, then the political crisis in Pakistan may increase further, which will increase the pressure on Shahbaz Sharif’s government.
