He was born on 30 June 1928 in Kundrodi, Kutch, Gujarat. A few years later, his family came to Mumbai from Gujarat and here his father Veerji Shah started a small grocery shop.

The shop was running as usual, the customers used to come and go, but there was a customer who would take the goods every time and do not take the name of giving money. When the borrowing increased and the question of giving money arose, the person offered something else. He said, ‘I will teach music to your sons instead of borrowing.’

Who knew that this deal would fill the future of two innocent children with tone. This method of repaying borrowings turned into a guru-disciple relationship. From that moment, music was knocked for the first time in the life of Kalyanji and his brother Anandji.

Kalyanji, along with his brother Anandji, formed an orchestral company called ‘Kalyanji Veerji & Party’, who used to perform performance in different cities.

Kalyanji’s first film work was ‘Samrat Chandragupta’, released in 1959. At that time, Anandji was not officially associated with him, but he supported him. Later Anandji officially started working with Kalyanji and composed music for films ‘Satta Bazaar’ and ‘Madari’ released in 1959. His first major hit was ‘Chhaliya’ in 1960. In 1965, films like ‘Himalaya’s lap’ and ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ brought him to the list of successful Bollywood musicians.

Kalyanji-Anandji gave music in more than 250 films, out of which 17 films were Golden Jubilee and 39 Silver Jubilee. He worked with the great singers of his time like Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor. He received the first Filmfare Award for ‘Best Music Director’ for the song ‘Mera Jeevan Kora Paper’ from the film ‘Kora Paper’.

In 1992, the Government of India honored the fourth highest civilian honor ‘Padma Shri’ for extraordinary contribution in the music sector. His pair composed 326 songs for Lata Mangeshkar, out of which 24 songs were given under their first name ‘Kalyanji Veerji Shah’ and the remaining 302 songs in the name of ‘Kalyanji-Anandji’.

The famous qawwali adorned with the voice of Manna Dey ‘Yari Hai Iman Mera, Dude Meri Zindagi …’ is still in the hearts of people. Kalyanji Veerji Shah said goodbye to the world on 24 August 2000, but the treasure of his music is still full. Due to which their immortal taranas gahe gahe bahghe heart wires.
