The Indian Army has shared the cutting of an old 1971 newspaper amid the tariff threats of US President Donald Trump. The cutting of this newspaper states how America has been supporting Pakistan for decades. It has also been told about the role of America in giving weapons to Pakistan since 1954. The Eastern Command of the Army posted on the social media platform X on Tuesday (5 August 2025), a day after Trump’s threat.
‘Two billion dollars of weapons have been sent to Pakistan since 1954’
This news was published a few months before the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. Bangladesh was formed as a result of the war. In this news, from that time to the last two decades, the role of America was told in providing weapons to Pakistan. Its title was, “US Arms Worth Dollar 2 Billion Shipd to Pakistan Sins 54” i.e. “Since 1954, US weapons worth two billion dollars have been sent to Pakistan.”
In the news, the then Defense Production Minister VC. Shukla has been cited, who had told the Rajya Sabha about the estimated value of weapons supplied during that period.
‘America-China sold weapons at a very low price’
He had told that after the Pak Army attack in Bangladesh, Pakistan had contacted NATO and Soviet Union to supply arms. The report said that the Soviet Union and the government of France refused to supply arms to Pakistan, but the US continued its support.
It said that both America and China sold weapons to Pakistan at a very low price, indicating that Pakistan had probably fought the war with India in 1971 with weapons provided by both countries. This post on social media has come amid the increasing criticism of Washington on purchasing crude oil from Russia from New Delhi.
India responded to Trump
India had on Monday strongly retaliated the US and the European Union for targeting New Delhi in an unfair and indiscriminate manner to purchase crude oil from Russia. A few hours after US President Donald Trump threatened to increase more tariffs on India, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement rejecting New Delhi’s energy relations with Moscow.

‘Western countries are doing business with Russia themselves’
Rejecting the American statement, India said that both the US and the European Union are continuing their business relations with Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs said that Europe-Russia trade includes not only energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron, steel and machinery, transport equipment. As far as America is concerned, it is continuing import of paladium, fertilizer and chemicals for its nuclear industry, uranium hexafloride from Russia, its EV industry.
