Since the order of the Supreme Court on stray dogs, there has been a topic of constant discussion on how to solve the matter easily. Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) is holding meetings daily to deal with the problem of increasing stray dogs in Delhi. At the same time, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh has made a big comment on this.

Describing it as a ‘big and sensitive issue’, he said that it is not only enough to remove dogs from the roads, but it is equally necessary to provide them with food, water and care at the shelter sites. The matter is under consideration in the Supreme Court and the corporation will take steps as per the guidelines of the court.

Extremely sensitive subject from human point of view- Mayor

The mayor said that at the moment the priority is to identify and catch the aggressive and fierce dogs so that the safety of the people can be ensured. He informed that the corporation is continuously working on the arrangement of shelter sites and in every meeting it is being decided how the care of animals can be improved.

He clarified that this is not only an administrative challenge, but also a very sensitive subject from a human point of view.

Action and challenges so far

Standing Committee Chairman Satya Sharma informed that since August 10, about 800 dogs have been caught and sent to shelter homes for sterilization. He said that no new instructions have been received after the Supreme Court reserved the order on August 11, due to which the corporation is continuing a campaign to catch aggressive, sick and attacking dogs.

MCD officials say that during this process many times there are difficulties in the campaign due to the intervention of dog lovers.

Plan ahead and the role of court

MCD says that their main objective is to ensure safety of both humans and animals. The Municipal Corporation is emphasizing that the action will continue according to the current guidelines until no new order comes from the court.

Experts believe that a permanent solution to the problem is possible only by sterilization and development of safe shelter sites. At the same time, the participation and awareness of citizens can also play an important role in dealing with this challenge.
