According to the Washington Post report, the US has been providing weapons against China to Taiwan. Recently, ammunition and drones were to be sent, but the Trump administration stopped it. US officials say this is a big change from Washington’s old perspective of supporting Taiwan.
Close to China for trade agreement
This decision of the Trump administration has come at a time when efforts to reduce tension between the US and China are fast. Trump is likely to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping soon. In such a situation, military assistance has been stopped despite the threats of China’s attack on Taiwan.
Trump’s stance is different from Biden
Former President Joe Biden’s tenure was rapidly supplied to Taiwan. Conversely, Trump says that Taiwan is a rich country and should buy his own weapons instead of being dependent on American help. Trump has also given the same argument for Ukraine.
Taiwan increased defense budget
Taiwan President Lai Chingte has recently approved the budget for drones and naval ships. In Trump’s first term (2017-2021), the US sold weapons worth $ 20 billion to Taiwan, including F-16 fighter aircraft and Abram tanks. But after becoming President for the second time, Trump is not giving importance to this military cooperation.
