‘Same thing happened with me too…’, Sourav Ganguly said on Rohit’s loss of captaincy, gave a big statement about Shubman Gill

Change of captaincy has become the biggest headline in Indian cricket these days. Now former captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has given his opinion on the decision to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy of the ODI team and make Shubman Gill the new captain. Ganguly clearly said, “This is not dismissal, but a decision taken with mutual consent. This happens with every veteran player in the last phase of his career, it happened with me too.”

“This is not removal, it is the result of conversation.”

Speaking to India Today on Thursday, Ganguly said that the BCCI and the selectors would have taken this decision only after talking to Rohit. He said, “I am not sure if this is any kind of dismissal. This is a normal cricketing decision which comes in every player’s career. Rohit has been a brilliant captain, he has led India to big titles like T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy.”

Ganguly further said that Rohit’s age has now become an important factor. He will be 40 years old by 2027 and it is natural that the team will now have to move towards a new captain.

“This happened with me and Dravid too”

Sharing his experience, ‘Dada’ said, “The same thing happened with me at the end of my career. The same thing happened with Rahul Dravid too. This is part of cricket. When you reach some level, one day this change has to happen. Shubman Gill will also have to face the same phase when he turns 40.”

It is clear from Ganguly’s statement that he did not take any critical stance towards Rohit, rather called it a natural transition.

Gill’s promotion was called the right decision

Sourav Ganguly called making Shubman Gill the ODI captain as the right step. He said, “There is nothing wrong in giving captaincy to Gill. He has performed brilliantly on difficult tours like England and Australia. When you are grooming a young captain, then it is the right time that Rohit should also be a part of the team and share his experience.”

Australia tour starts under the leadership of Gill

Under the leadership of Gill, India will play a three-match ODI series against Australia from October 19. This will be the first big test for Gill as captain, while Rohit can now be seen as a senior batsman in the team.
