Benjamin Netanyahu calls emergency meeting, accuses Hamas of breaking ceasefire – Rafah border closed indefinitely

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an emergency meeting with the Defense Minister and senior security officials on Sunday. This step was taken after reports said that Hamas had violated the ceasefire. Netanyahu posted on ‘X’ and said, ‘After Hamas broke the ceasefire, the Prime Minister held a meeting with the Defense Minister and security chiefs and has given instructions for strict action against terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip.’

Hamas and Israel accuse each other of violations
The ground situation is very tense. Palestinian officials claim that since the ceasefire came into force, the Israeli army has violated it 47 times, resulting in 38 deaths and 143 injuries. (Al Jazeera) At the same time, Israel is accusing Hamas of initiating the attack. This dispute is increasing at a time when more than 68,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,70,000 have been injured in the conflict that has been going on since October 2023. The October 7 attacks in Israel killed 1,139 people and took about 200 hostage.

Rafah border closed, humanitarian crisis deepens
Netanyahu announced on Saturday that the Rafah border crossing linking Gaza and Egypt would remain closed ‘until further notice’. This decision is linked to Hamas’s delay in handing over the bodies of the hostages. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, reopening the border will be considered only when Hamas fully accepts all the bodies and conditions under the agreement. This border is the only humanitarian and logistics route for Gaza residents, so its closure has deepened the crisis.

Bodies of hostages handed over, protesters expressed anger
Hamas handed over the bodies of two more Israeli hostages to Israel, which were delivered to Israeli personnel in Gaza through the Red Cross. Meanwhile, protesters in Tel Aviv demanded the government to take steps to bring back all hostages and bodies from Gaza as soon as possible. At the same time, the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo said that preparations were being made to open the border from October 20 (Monday) so that Palestinian citizens trapped in Egypt could be allowed to return to Gaza, but due to the current tension, questions have been raised on the plan.
