After the Teesta River Project, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has made another such deal with China, which is considered a big blow to India. Now Bangladesh has joined hands with China regarding Mongla Port, this was a very important port for India. It will also be constructed on the land originally proposed for the Indian Economic Zone. This agreement (MoU) was signed in Beijing.

MoU signed in the presence of Tariq Rehman

The Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority in Beijing on (June 25) signed a memorandum of understanding for the China-Bangladesh Mongla Port Economic Zone with China’s state-owned Civil Engineering Construction Corporation in the presence of Tariq Rahman. It will be developed on 110 acres of land adjacent to Mongla Port in Bagerhat.

Under the bilateral initiative between India and Bangladesh, this land was first given to the Indian Economic Zone, but the interim government of Mohammad Yunus removed the project from the list in October 2025, citing the inability to start work on it within the stipulated time. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman is on a visit to China. This decision is being seen as a big change in terms of their investment strategy.

Bangladesh eyes Chinese investment?

It is believed that Bangladesh is trying to attract more Chinese investment. This investment also includes the Mongla Agreement, which was signed during Tariq Rahman’s visit to China to strengthen economic cooperation. Additionally, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority also signed a development agreement with China Road and Bridge Corporation for the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Anwara, Chattogram.

Consensus reached on Teesta also

Earlier, Bangladesh and China have agreed to cooperate on Teesta River Project. China said that Bangladesh can benefit from China’s experience in the field of water management. According to Bangladesh’s government news agency BSS, this agreement was reached during the meeting of China’s Water Resources Minister Li Guoying with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman present in Beijing.
