Azaan Ban: The plan to impose a nationwide ban on Islamic Azaan (public call to prayer) in Denmark has once again come into discussion. The country’s Immigration Minister Morten Bodskov has said that the plan to ban Azaan will be taken forward again. Morten Bodskov said that the increasing Islamization in Denmark is taking up more space than necessary in public life. He said that the sound of Azaan should not be heard on the rooftops of Denmark.
He also said that the atmosphere in some parts of the country should not be such that people feel that they have come to a city in Islamabad. According to the report, the share of Muslim community in the total population of Denmark is about 5 percent and it is the largest minority community in the country.
New step amid strict immigration policies
This statement comes at a time when Denmark, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, is implementing one of the strictest immigration policies in Europe. This year, Denmark has implemented a law banning the Islamic full-face niqab in public places. The government has also instructed educational institutions to remove prayer rooms. Morten Bodskov said that a system like Azaan has no place in Denmark.

This has been tried before
This is not the first attempt to ban Azaan. Denmark has earlier also brought a proposal to ban Azaan in public places in the years 2020 and 2025. However, both times this proposal could not reach Parliament.
There are already restrictions in the capital
A system like ban on public Azaan is already in place in some parts of Denmark. Due to strict noise regulations in the capital Copenhagen, mosques are not allowed to broadcast Azaan through loudspeakers. Even in the Grand Mosque of Copenhagen, Azaan is not given through loudspeakers outside.
There may also be a legal challenge
The decision to ban any religious practice in the entire country may face legal challenge. The Danish Constitution guarantees the right to practice religious worship in public. In such a situation, a nationwide ban on Azaan may raise questions related to the right to religious freedom.
Legal aspects will be examined first
Morten Bodskov said that the government will first investigate whether a nationwide ban on Azaan is possible in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and religious freedom. Criticism of the government’s proposal has also started. Critics say this move targets only one religion. They believe that such a decision may violate the right to religious freedom.
