Big news for IPL fans, now 74, don’t know what will be the number of matches?

The 19th season of IPL 2026 league is going on. This tournament was started in 2008. The current chairman of IPL, Arun Dhumal has given a big update regarding the future of the league. He has told that from the year 2028, not 74 but 94 matches will be played in IPL.

IPL 2028: Big increase in the number of matches

BCCI is planning major changes in the format of the tournament for the upcoming media rights cycle. Board officials have made it clear that from the year 2028, the total number of matches will be increased to 94. Currently, there are only 74 matches in a season including playoffs. With this new decision, cricket fans will get to see more exciting matches than before.

Competitions will increase in the league stage

At present a team plays 14 matches during the league stage. But from 2028, every team will get a chance to play 18-18 matches. This simply means that the tournament is going to be even longer and challenging. This will make the points table battle even more interesting.

Only 10 teams will remain part

Chairman Arun Dhumal has clarified in an interview to ‘India Today’ that the number of matches will increase, but there will be no change in the number of teams. Only 10 teams will continue to play in the tournament. The management believes that increasing new teams would not be the right decision at this time, hence increasing the number of matches with 10 teams is the best option.

Focus on home and away system

The real reason behind having 94 matches is to fully implement the ‘home and away’ format.

Home ground: Every team will play one match at home.
Opponent’s field: The second match will be held on the opposition team’s ground.

In this way, every team will play two matches against each other, which will maintain balance in the tournament.
