The 2026 Commonwealth Games is starting from 23 July. This is going to be the smallest Commonwealth Games in the last 32 years, in which the number of games has been halved. 20 sports will be played at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, while only 10 sports will be played in Glasgow. From cricket to hockey and badminton were also removed.
Australia pulled out
Actually, Victoria city of Australia was going to host the Commonwealth Games. At that time, there was a plan to include 21 sports in this multilateral event, but difficulties increased when the estimated cost of organizing the Games increased from 2.6 billion dollars to 6-7 billion Australian dollars. Due to this, the Government of Victoria withdrew from hosting the Games on 18 July 2023.
Almost a year had passed, but a new host could not be found for the Commonwealth Games 2026. In March 2024, the Commonwealth Games Federation had offered Malaysia 100 million euros to host, but Malaysia refused saying that this amount was not enough to organize the Games.
Glasgow took responsibility
When no host was found, Glasgow proposed hosting in April 2024. Glasgow last successfully hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014, in which a total of 18 sports were organised. The infrastructure created at that time will be reused and accommodation for the athletes will not be made up of a Games Village but of hotels as well as student accommodation for Caledonian University and the University of Glasgow.
Cricket, badminton, hockey all out
Since Glasgow is hosting the Games on a low budget, the number of Games has been reduced from 21 to 10. These 10 sports include basketball, artistic gymnastics, athletics, bowls, boxing, cycling, judo, netball, swimming and weightlifting. Compared to the 2022 Birmingham Games, this time aquatics, badminton, beach volleyball, cricket, hockey, lawn bowls, squash, table tennis, triathlon and wrestling will not be included.
