The story of this holy Sankashti Chaturthi, which falls in the month of Adhik, has been going on since the Satyayuga period. It is said that the story of this fast was narrated by Maharishi Ved Vyas to Panchali Draupadi in Dwapara Yuga. There was a time when the guardian sage of the Kuru dynasty had come to meet the Pandavas at their ashram during their exile.
Then Panchali Draupadi, who was stripped naked by Dushasana in the public gathering and insulted by Duryodhana, was surprised to know what sin she had committed due to which she had to bear this insult. Then Maharishi replied to him the story of King Chandrasen and Queen Ratnavali.
Maharishi started the story by saying – Once upon a time, King Chandrasen was living a happy life with his wife Ratnavali. There was prosperity and purity everywhere in his kingdom. But his enemies and greedy emperors did not like his happiness. One day the enemies of King Chandrasen attacked his kingdom and snatched away everything from him. King Chandrasen and Queen Ratnawali had to leave their kingdom and take refuge in the forest for their safety.
Now both of them started wandering in the forest to earn their living. One day both of them felt thirsty for water, they were wandering in the forest due to thirst. While wandering, he accidentally reached the ashram of a sage. That ashram belonged to Maharishi Markandeya Rishi. When both of them reached this place in the middle of such a dense forest, they felt ultimate peace, they felt as if their desires had been satisfied after coming to this place.
When he came to know about this place, without any delay he went before Maharishi Markandeya and bowed before him and started asking for a solution to get relief from his life of suffering. Maharishi blessed him and asked him the reason for his plight. The king and queen told them the whole story. Like Draupadi, the king was also doubting what sin he had committed due to which he had to suffer this pain.
Sage Markandeya was omniscient and could see the future and present very well. Maharishi carefully examined the deeds of the king in his previous birth and while answering his questions said – “Hey Rajan, in your previous birth you were a most brilliant king. One day you had gone to the forest to hunt, there you saw some snake girls wearing their red clothes performing the fasting ritual. You got impressed by them and started asking them about that fasting ritual, that was the time of Adhik Maas.
He told that all of them are fasting on Sankashti Chaturthi of Lord Shri Ganesha. By simply observing this fast, all the problems of a person end. Man easily gets relief from his sufferings. After hearing about the Sankashti fast of Adhikamaas of Lord Shri Ganesha from the mouth of snake girls, they also decided in their mind to observe this fast.
But with the passage of time, after attaining name, fame and fame, he forgot to observe this fast. Due to his power and authority, he became an arrogant and unjust king. As a result of his misdeeds, he died untimely. Ultimately, he had to be born in a royal family in this life too, to suffer the consequences of his misdeeds in his previous birth. The main reason for the plight of King Chandrasen is his misdeeds in his previous birth due to which he has to face many troubles in this birth also.
When King Chandrasen came to know about the misdeeds of his previous birth from the sage Maharshi, he started feeling remorse. At that very moment he took a resolution that he would not repeat the mistakes of his previous birth in this life. In his previous birth, he had disrespected Lord Shri Ganesha’s Sankashti Chaturthi, hence in this birth, both the king and the queen observed the fast with devotion on Sankashti Chaturthi of the Krishna Paksha of the coming month. As a result of which he regained his lost kingdom and respect.
