Dalai Lama Birthday: PM Modi congratulated Buddhist religious leader Dalai Lama on his 91st birthday, what did he say that will irritate China?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (6 July 2026) greeted the 14th Dalai Lama on his 91st birthday. He said that Dalai Lama’s message of peace, harmony and humanity is a source of inspiration for people all over the world. The Prime Minister also wished him a long, healthy and happy life. PM Modi wrote on social media platform X that happy birthday to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He said that his message of peace and harmony has been guiding people all over the world. His moral and spiritual strength and his dedication towards human welfare are praiseworthy. He wished good health and long life of the Dalai Lama.

On the birthday of Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhist monks and people of Tibetan community organized special prayer meetings at Dorje Drak Monastery in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. During this, religious rituals were performed for his long life, good health and world peace. A large number of devotees participated in this program.

When was the Dalai Lama born?

Dalai Lama was born on 6 July 1935 in Takster village of Tibet in an ordinary farmer family. Her childhood name was Lhamo Thondup, which means wish-fulfilling goddess. When the Dalai Lama was two years old, he was considered the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. After this, he was brought to Lhasa in the year 1939 and on 22 February 1940, he was formally made the spiritual head of Tibet. Later he was named Tenzin Gyatso. He assumed full responsibility for Tibet in a ceremony held at the Norbulingka Palace on 17 November 1950.

The situation changed after the rebellion in Tibet in 1959. After the rebellion was suppressed, the Dalai Lama had to come to India and take refuge along with more than 80 thousand Tibetan refugees. Since then he is living in India and giving the message of peace, compassion and non-violence across the world. Even today his birthday is considered a very important occasion for the Tibetan community and his followers around the world. It is not only a religious event, but also a symbol of Tibetan identity, culture and spiritual heritage.

Program on Dalai Lama’s birthday

Every year the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) organizes special programs on this occasion. This year too, programs were organized on his birthday in many countries of the world. However, this time the Dalai Lama could not personally attend the public function. According to his office, he had undergone a replacement operation on his left knee in Delhi in early June. After recovery, he is scheduled to go to Ladakh. Last year, CTA also started the Year of Compassion campaign. Under this campaign, special emphasis was laid on environmental protection, planting trees on a large scale and promoting Tibetan language and culture. Its purpose is to convey the Dalai Lama’s message of compassion and humanity to the coming generations.
