Chief Justice of the country Surya Kant said on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) that the youth should protest but for that they should not create trouble for others by taking to the streets. He said that all countrymen have the right to demonstrate peacefully.
CJI Surya Kant made this comment when he was hearing a petition seeking direction to the Center to take a time-bound decision on the Maharashtra government’s proposal to change the name of Navi Mumbai International Airport. CJI Surya Kant has said this on the protests regarding this demand. However, the Supreme Court has refused to consider this petition.
According to the report of Live Law, CJI Surya Kant said, ‘Everyone has the right to protest peacefully and under the law, but do not create trouble for the common man by taking to the streets.’ The Maharashtra government had proposed to change the name of Navi Mumbai International Airport to ‘Lokneta DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport’.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi told the counsel for the petitioner organization ‘Prakashjot Samajik Sanstha’, ‘This would amount to interference in policy making.’ The bench said that it is not inclined to hear the petition challenging the November 2025 order of the Bombay High Court, in which the petition was dismissed.

The bench gave liberty to the petitioner to pursue the matter before the competent authority. The court said on this, ‘Is it the job of the court to decide what should be the name of an airport?’ The court also said, ‘Let the state government take the matter forward. In a democratic system you have some rights and you can use them. You know this very well.
