Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on Friday (May 15) while returning from his two-day state visit to China, Trump said that he has done Pakistan a favor by maintaining the current ceasefire with Iran. With this statement, the Islamabad peace talks are being seen in a different context, which was earlier seen as a delicate, multilateral effort. Trump has presented this as a concession to the Pakistani leadership and has recognized Islamabad’s diplomatic capital. It has also been indicated that Washington expects continued cooperation regarding regional security.
These comments of Trump came at a time when he was briefing the media about the results of bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. When asked about the West Asia peace process, the US President praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
Pakistan’s role in ceasefire
According to senior diplomatic sources, the Islamabad-based Foreign Ministry took immediate action on Iran’s 5-point proposal at the beginning of the month and sent it to Washington. Trump’s public acceptance confirms that it was through Pakistan’s means that the deadlock was broken and a ceasefire agreement to protect important sea lanes like Hormuz became possible.
For Pakistan, this ceasefire is not only a diplomatic victory but also an economic necessity.
