On the night of 2 June 2026, there was chaos in Musallahpur Haat area of Patna. This place is called the biggest educational hub of Bihar. - According to the April 2026 data of Smart Scrapers, the number of coaching centers in Bihar is 6,383. This figure has increased by 1.64% compared to 2023.
- Patna is the biggest hub, where there are 1,256 coaching centres. After that comes Muzaffarpur (578) and Gaya (428).
- Of these, 92.98% i.e. 5,935 coaching centers are single-owner, while the rest are part of big brands.
- There are 496 coaching centers in Bhagalpur and Banka alone, where more than 58,000 students are studying.
- At the national level, India’s coaching industry is worth US $ 7.2 billion (about Rs 60,000 crore) and is expected to reach $ 17.8 billion by 2034.
How many crores is the turnover of Bihar’s coaching market?
According to the Times of India report, there are about 3,000 private coaching institutes in Bihar and its annual turnover is more than Rs 250 crore. Insiders believe that this figure will soon cross Rs 1,000 crore.
The estimated annual market of private coaching in Bihar is around Rs 14,000 to 15,000 crore. This figure is based on the annual expenditure of Rs 1.25 lakh per student studying in the coaching institutes of the state.

The coaching industry provides employment to lakhs of people in Bihar. The average annual salary of an Academic Coach in Bihar is around Rs 4.72 lakh, which ranges from Rs 2.16 lakh with less experience to Rs 7.5 lakh with more experience. It is estimated that the coaching industry is employing thousands of teachers, counselors and administrative staff across the country.

Eastern India is the center of coaching boom. About 79% students in Tripura, 75% in West Bengal, 57% in Odisha and 52.5% in Bihar are taking private coaching, while the national average is only 27%. How is the government trying to control it?
Bihar is the leading state of the country in this matter. It is the first state in the country to implement Bihar Coaching Institutes (Control and Regulation) Act, 2010. Now the government is going to make it more strict:
- Mandatory Registration: Mandatory registration for every coaching center with more than 25 students. For this, a fee of Rs 15,000 will have to be paid and this registration will be valid for 3 years.
- Heavy penalty: There will be a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh for running coaching without registration. Violation of other rules may result in a fine of Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh and cancellation of registration.
- Police Surveillance: Now complete details of all the coaching centers will be kept at the police station level. Police verification of teachers and personnel will be mandatory.
- Strict rules in the interest of students: Minimum 2 square feet space per student is mandatory. Graduation degree is necessary for teachers. There will be a complete ban on publicity by posting photos of toppers and the rules for refund of fees will be clear.
- Government more strict after Khan sir case: After this incident, Bihar government has announced to make a comprehensive coaching policy in the next three months.
