The Indian team is going to tour Sri Lanka to play a two-match Test series in August 2026. Sri Lanka Cricket has announced this tour on Thursday. This series is going to be a part of ICC Champion 2025–2027. With this, the Indian team is going to play a Test series on Sri Lankan soil after almost 9 years. The first Test match between the two countries will be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from 15 to 19 August. After this, the second and final test is going to be held at the Sinhalese Sports Club from 23rd to 27th August.

If we look at India’s Test record in Sri Lanka, the team played a Test series there for the first time in 1985. Since then, 24 test matches have been played between the two teams on Sri Lankan soil. Of these, India has won 9 matches, while Sri Lanka has won 7 matches. Whereas 8 tests have ended in a draw. The special thing is that the Indian team has registered consecutive wins in the last 5 test matches played in Sri Lanka. On the last tour in 2017, under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, India won the series 3-0.

The Indian team has so far played 8 test series in Sri Lanka. Of these, India has won the series in 2017, 2015 and 1993. Virat Kohli has been the captain in the year 2015 also. After losing the first Test on that tour, India made a spectacular comeback by winning the next two matches and captured the series. Whereas the Indian team has lost in the test series of 1985, 2001 and 2008. Whereas the series of 1997 and 2010 ended in a draw.

This test series is going to be very important for both the teams in terms of the World Test Championship. Both India and Sri Lanka would like to strengthen their positions in the points table. In the current WTC cycle, the Indian team captained by Shubman Gill is in fifth place with 48.15 percent points after 9 matches. Whereas Sri Lankan team remains at sixth position with 44.44 percent marks.
