The second phase of voting is going to be held on 142 seats in West Bengal on Wednesday (April 29), in which more than 1,448 candidates including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are in the fray. Meanwhile, Bhawanipur Assembly has become the hottest seat, because there is a direct contest on this seat between Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. This time a close contest is being seen on this seat. A record 92.72 percent voting took place in the first phase of voting on 152 seats in the state, which is the highest turnout since independence.

The future of 1,448 candidates will be decided in the voting to be held today, which includes 1,228 men and 220 women. Mamata Banerjee, Suvendu Adhikari, Firhad Hakim and many other prominent leaders are candidates. Overall, more than 32 lakh voters will participate in the voting, which includes 16 crore male voters, 57 crore female voters and 792 third gender voters. Over 41 lakh first-time voters in the age group of 18-19 will cast their votes, while around 3200 voters are aged 100 years and above.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting from Bhawanipur assembly constituency, from where she had won last year. Mamta had contested elections from both Bhawanipur and Nandigram seats. He had to face defeat from Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram. BJP leaders are now challenging the TMC chief in Bhawanipur.
2,473 people arrested in Bengal
An Election Commission official said that a total of 2,473 people were arrested in Bengal as part of the intensive surveillance campaign ahead of the second phase of voting. The official said 809 people were detained across the state on Monday night, while the number increased to 2,473 on Tuesday. Most of the people arrested have been identified as potential miscreants.
