Liquor Price Hike: A bad news is coming for the alcohol drinkers in Tamil Nadu. The state government is thinking of increasing the prices of liquor by Rs 10-50 per bottle.
Prohibition and Excise Minister K. at the Secretariat in Chennai on Monday. This proposal was discussed in the board meeting of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) chaired by Vignesh. It is possible that from the end of this week you will have to pay more money per bottle of liquor.
How much will the price per bottle increase?
It is being told that there will be an increase of Rs 10-20 per bottle for ordinary and medium range brands. There will be an increase of Rs 30-50 per bottle for premium and foreign liquor (IMFL). Similarly, the price of beer is also expected to increase by Rs 10 per bottle.
However, no final decision has been taken yet. The last change in liquor prices in the state was made on February 1, 2024, when the government increased the prices of various brands of liquor by Rs 10 to Rs 80. If approval is given to increase the prices this time, it will be the first change in prices in more than two years.
Why is the price being increased?
The government recently closed 717 Tasmac retail outlets located near educational institutions like schools and colleges, bus stands and temples. This resulted in a huge decrease in the government’s revenue. It is possible that the government is trying to compensate for this loss by increasing the rates.
According to a report in The New Indian Express, a senior Tasmac official said that a manufacturing cess was recently imposed on liquor manufacturers supplying IMFL products and beer in the state. From this fee the government will get additional revenue of about Rs 6000-10000 crore annually. Here, due to rising taxes and rising cost of raw materials, liquor manufacturing companies had also asked the government to increase the purchase price.
