Booker Prize 2026: The long list of the Booker Prize 2026, one of the world’s most prestigious literary awards, has been released. This time a total of 13 novels have been included in the list. Of these, 10 authors have entered the race for the Booker Prize for the first time, while this is the first novel for three authors. The selected books represent seven countries and three continents. These include many specials like dark comedy, dystopian fiction, domestic drama and historical stories.

3 books selected from 163 novels

163 novels published in the UK and Ireland between October 2025 and September 2026 were considered for the Booker Prize 2026. Out of these, the jury has selected 13 novels for the longlist. This selection process was presided over by author and historian Mary Beard. Along with him, poet Raymond Antrobus, musician Jarvis Cocker, writer Rebecca Liu and actress Sarah Jessica Parker are included in the jury.

Former winners and new writers included in the list

This time the list also includes former Booker winners Marlon James and Douglas Stuart. Marlene James returns to the longlist for the first time since winning the award in 2015 with her novel The Disappears. Douglas Stuart’s novel The Land in Winter has also been selected. American writer Elizabeth Strout has got a place in the Booker long list for the third time for her novel Tell Me Everything. This novel is based on the background of the post-Covid world and the US presidential elections in 2024.

The novel is based on many subjects

This year, topics like family, identity, politics, crime, war, mental health, dementia and social change figure prominently in the books included in the long list. The list also includes books like Switzy, Helen of Nowhere, The End of Everything, Black Bag, The Renovation, May We Feed the King, The Palm House, All Them Dogs I Ain’t Never Seen and The Vivisectors.

What did the Booker Prize jury say?

Mary Beard, chair of the jury of the Booker Prize 2026, said that this year’s longlist proves that excellent literature is not limited to a single formula. According to him, a balanced mix of dark comedy, dystopian fantasy and stories based on domestic life can be seen in the selected books. Gabby Wood, Chief Executive Officer of the Booker Prize Foundation, said that this year’s long list reflects the diversity and creativity of contemporary literature. Books written on different countries and subjects have got a place in it.

When will the shortlist and winner be declared?

The shortlist for the Booker Prize 2026 will be announced on 22 September at London’s South Bank Centre. After this, the name of the winner will be announced on November 10. The winner will be given a prize money of 50 thousand pounds, while each writer included in the shortlist will be given 2500 pounds.
