Does Drinking Milk Increase Parkinson’s Disease Risk: You might have heard or seen somewhere that there may be a connection between milk and Parkinson’s disease. Many people are shocked to hear this and start wondering whether drinking milk is also harmful. The truth is that the research that has been done on this subject is not completely baseless, but the story is not so simple that you should stop drinking milk, otherwise you will get disease.

What do experts say

Dr Sadiq Pathan told TOI that it has been seen in many studies that the risk of Parkinson’s may increase slightly in people who drink dairy products, especially milk in large quantities. Especially in men, this risk has been found to be 20 to 40 percent higher. However, this is not a direct cause but a relationship, which is yet to be fully understood.

What came out in the research?

The longest and largest research on this topic came from Harvard University-related studies, the Nurses Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. After tracking people’s diets for about 25 years, it was found that people who consumed three or more servings of low-fat dairy per day had a 34 percent higher risk of Parkinson’s, compared to those who consumed very little dairy.

Similarly, an interesting pattern emerged in the Cancer Prevention Study of the American Cancer Society. Thousands of men and women were included in this and it was found that among those who consumed dairy, this risk was increased by 1.8 times in men and 1.3 times in women.

Does this happen with milk?

Now the question is, what can happen in milk? Some research has raised the possibility that pesticide residues present in milk, such as heptachlor epoxide, may be harmful to the brain. Apart from this, galactose present in milk is also considered to be a factor, which can affect the brain if taken in excess quantity. Another interesting theory is related to the gut-brain connection. It is believed that dairy can affect our gut microbiome, causing certain proteins to be produced that can later reach the brain and increase the risk of disease.

However, this does not mean at all that you should give up milk or dairy products immediately. Research only indicates that balance is necessary. If you consume too much milk, especially low-fat or skim milk, it may be better to reduce it a little.

What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s cases are also gradually increasing in India. Its symptoms include hand tremors, body stiffness, slow movements and deterioration of posture. Constipation, reduced ability to smell, sleep problems and mood swings can also be seen in the initial signs. Doctors believe that it is not possible to completely prevent this disease, but the risk can definitely be reduced by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
