‘More than 2 lakh people paid $1,00,000’, Trump government’s big update on H-1B visa

This year, more than two lakh people have paid a fee of one lakh dollars for H-1B visa to work in America. US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin said that more than two lakh people chose to get their applications processed on priority basis by paying a fee of US $ 1 lakh.

Markwayne Mullin gave this information to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Tuesday (June 2, 2026). He said that in the financial year 2026, DHS has received about 2.86 lakh applications for H-1B visa. He gave this information when US Senator Susan Collins expressed concern over the shortage of doctors in rural areas. Mullin said that out of 2.86 applicants, 2 lakh people have chosen to apply on priority basis by paying one lakh dollars. He said that the applications of those paying this fee will be disposed of more quickly.

Mullin said that applications requiring a fee of $100,000 are processed in about 15 days, while normal applications take about seven and a half months. US Senator Collins told the subcommittee that a hospital in Presque Isle, a rural area in the northern part of the state of Maine, had to pay this fee to call a critically needed surgeon from abroad.

Collins asked, ‘Would you consider exempting medical professionals from this fee if a community can prove there are no suitable physicians available?’ On this, Mullin assured that he will explore possible solutions in this regard and see if some leniency can be taken in such cases depending on the circumstances.

“There’s a huge difference between bringing a computer expert from another country to work in California and Silicon Valley and bringing a desperately needed surgeon to a rural hospital in northern Maine,” Collins said. At the same time, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski from Alaska raised the issue of shortage of teachers in schools in rural areas of her state.
