A big uproar has arisen after a controversial cartoon of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was published in a leading Norwegian newspaper. In this cartoon published on Wednesday (May 20), PM Modi has been shown as a ‘snapper’. On social media, people are strongly condemning it, calling it racist and the old and poor thinking of western countries.
What is the whole controversy?
The controversy started when PM Modi was on a tour of Norway. During a press conference there, Norwegian journalist Helle Ling raised the question why PM Modi was not answering the media’s questions. Indian Foreign Ministry diplomat Sibi George had expressed strong objection to this.
Answering the question, he said that without understanding India’s democracy and media, some foreign organizations form opinions on the basis of incomplete information. Sibi further said that it is not easy to understand a big country like India.
Amidst this debate, the newspaper published an opinion article titled – ‘A clever and slightly annoying man’. This controversial cartoon was also posted with this article. In the cartoon, PM Modi has been shown like a snake charmer.

Accusations of ‘racism’ on social media
As soon as this cartoon appeared, people got angry on the internet. People say that this cartoon shows the same old thinking of western countries about India, in which India was considered only as ‘the country of snake charmers’. The resentment between India and social media users regarding this cartoon is continuously increasing. People are calling it an insult to the Prime Minister of India.
One user posted on social media platform X and wrote, ‘This cartoon is completely racist and full of discrimination. The biggest irony is that PM Modi himself has said many times that earlier the world considered India a country of snake charmers, but now India has changed. Despite this, a big newspaper showed him in this form which is very shameful.
