Russian President Vladimir Putin has reached Beijing after US President Donald Trump’s visit to China. Putin, who reached Beijing on Tuesday night, was welcomed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. China welcomed Putin by rolling out the red carpet. A bilateral meeting was held between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, in which global issues including Iran, Ukraine war and trade were discussed.
This conversation between the two leaders is also considered important because earlier on May 14-15, US President Donald Trump had visited Beijing and he also had extensive discussions with Xi Jinping on everything from the Iran and Ukraine war to bilateral trade tensions and regional developments. Before the talks at the Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping formally welcomed Putin.

China is a special friend of Iran
Putin’s visit is taking place amid global concerns over increasing tension in West Asia. This tension has arisen after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. Iran is a close strategic partner of both Russia and China. Despite US sanctions, China imports 90 percent of oil from Iran.
