Tension regarding competitive examinations is not a new thing in the country, but when an examination is cancelled, it affects not just the dates but millions of dreams. The news of cancellation of NEET exam gave mental shock to thousands of students. Meanwhile, a painful news from Goa forced the entire country to think.
According to reports, a 17-year-old student living in Curtorim area of Goa committed suicide. It is being told that he was preparing for NEET exam and was very upset due to the cancellation of the exam due to paper leak. This student studied in a higher secondary school in Margao. His father is a guard in railways.
When the father returned home on the day of the incident, he found his son hanging. Mother and sister had already gone to their village. Police found a note from the spot, in which the student had written that he no longer wants to appear in any competitive examination. At the same time, a case of suicide of a student due to cancellation of NEET has also come to light from Lakhimpur Kheri in UP.
The figures will surprise you
This incident is not an isolated one regarding student suicide. According to media reports, in the year 2024, 20 students committed suicide in Kota, Rajasthan alone. Whereas even in 2022 and 2023, the quota figure alone was more than a dozen. In 2022, 15 students and in 2023, 29 students had embraced death in Kota alone.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data presented in Parliament shows that between 2019 and 2021, more than 35,000 students in the country committed suicide. The government had told in Parliament that counseling cells, grievance cells and support mechanisms have been created in educational institutions. Separate cells, grievance committees and liaison officers have also been appointed for SC/ST students.
Study pressure?
If reports are to be believed, today students are not just facing the pressure of studies. He is carrying the burden of expectations, the burden of family dreams, society’s comparison and worries about the future all together. In such a situation, when a big exam like NEET is cancelled, they feel that their months of hard work have gone in vain.
