PM Narendra Modi Italy Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Rome on Tuesday, the last stop of his fifth country tour. PM Modi has reached Rome on the invitation of Italy’s PM Georgia Meloni. On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Meloni said that today is a historic day. Indian PM Modi is on a bilateral tour of Italy for the first time. India and Italy are working as close partners. Italy has strong strategic relations with India.
Both the leaders addressed a joint press conference. During this, PM Modi described Italy as an important partner of India and said that our talks are much ahead of the fixed agenda. Technology and innovation are partnership engines for both the countries. Also said that work on defense cooperation between the two countries is going on.
PM Modi has also talked about working together with Italy on shipping, ports, modernization, logistics and blue economy. He has said that our defense industrial roadmap has opened the way for co-development and co-production. As maritime powers, close cooperation in the area of connectivity between India and Italy is natural.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that PM Narendra Modi met the Prime Minister of the Republic of Italy Georgia Meloni at the famous Villa Doria Pamphili. The PM was given a formal guard of honour. After this, delegation level talks took place.
Jaiswal said that both the leaders have reviewed the progress made in the implementation of the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29. It has been agreed to deepen and enrich bilateral cooperation. Especially in the fields of trade, investment, technology, defence, blue economy, connectivity, education, consensus has been reached. Apart from this, developments related to geopolitics have been discussed. It has also been agreed to work together on global issues of common interest.
Apart from this, he said that in an important decision, both sides agreed to take India-Italy relations to the level of ‘Special Strategic Partnership’. Many agreements were exchanged in the presence of both the leaders. These will promote cooperation in areas like critical minerals, defense industrial cooperation, security, maritime transport and ports, agriculture and research cooperation, higher education, recruitment of nurses and Ayurveda. The wide range of agreements reflects the growing scope and ambition of the India-Italy strategic partnership.

Apart from this, PM Modi also met the President of Italy. PM Modi said, ‘I met President Sergio Mattarella in Rome. We have discussed different aspects related to friendship between India and Italy. This includes trade, investment and cultural relations. We have discussed how areas like artificial intelligence, critical minerals, space and nuclear energy can become opportunities for cooperation between countries.

PMs of both countries signed joint declaration
Modi has signed a joint declaration with PM Meloni at the UN Headquarters in Italy. India and Italy are strengthening their relations under the ‘Joint Strategic Plan 2025-2029’. The focus of their plan is to increase cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, defence, clean energy, innovation, science and technology, and cultural exchange. Bilateral trade between the two countries is expected to increase to US $ 16.77 billion by 2025. Italy’s total foreign direct investment (FDI) in India between April 2000 and September 2025 stood at US $ 3.66 billion.
