Oldest School in India: The history of India’s education system is very old. In ancient times, Gurukul and Pathshalas were the main medium of education, but if we talk about the modern school system, there is a school in the country which has been imparting education continuously for three centuries. Due to this, this school is considered to be the oldest continuously operating school in the country. This school, which was started in 1715, is still providing education to thousands of students and is maintaining its historical heritage. In such a situation, let us tell you today which is the oldest school in India.
India’s oldest school started in 1715
The oldest school in India is St. George’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School located in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. This school was established in 1715, initially as a Military Male Orphan Asylum. The purpose of starting it was to provide education and care to the orphan children of British soldiers stationed in Madras at that time. With time this institute continued to grow and was later established as a full-fledged school.
This institute has a history of three centuries
This school has been a witness to the British rule, India’s freedom movement, independence in 1947 and subsequent major social and educational changes in the country. Its continuous operation for more than 300 years makes it one of the most specialized educational institutions in the country. Despite becoming a part of history, this school is still fully active. Education is imparted here from nursery to class 12. Presently more than 1500 students are studying in the campus of this school located in Shenoy Nagar, Chennai.

At the same time, students are given education in science, commerce, arts and other subjects through English medium. Here, along with studies, special attention is also given to sports and co-curricular activities. This institute is known for its strong hockey tradition. Over the years, many students who have studied here have represented Tamil Nadu and India. This is the reason why the identity of the school is not limited only to its academic achievements, but its important contribution in the world of sports is also considered.
